It is a Well Known Fact that ArtWorks in Davie County!
The Davie County Arts Council, Inc. was established in 1975 as a non-profit organization and promotes and sponsors the discovery, appreciation, and enrichment of the arts throughout Davie County. Located on historic Main Street in the Town of Mocksville, the Arts Council is centrally positioned to carry out its mission of "Connecting People to the ARTS!"
In addition to community outreach programs and Arts In Education for children, the Arts Council schedules and presents arts events and performances at the Brock Performing Arts Center. In October of 1994, a campaign was launched to raise capital funds to renovate the Old Mocksville Elementary and High School Auditorium, which originally opened in 1951. It was used for forty-four years for school chapel programs, school and community drama presentations, music recitals, pageants, concerts, religious services, meetings, and instructional classes. The renovated facility opened in 1998 as the Brock Performing Arts Center.
Arts In Education is the most important role the arts council has in the community. Each year live performances are scheduled to be done in the schools. The artists contracted to perform also perform in much larger counties such as Forsyth, Mecklenburg and Cumberland Counties. The selection made is based on the ability of the show to meet the curriculum of each grade level. This includes an Artist In Residence who spends a day in each school demonstrating a type of art while giving a tie-in to history or science. Artist who have been selected have shown the students the creation of pottery, glass blowing, painting and even scrimshaw. It is the task of the arts council to find the funding for these important curriculum based shows. During the 2009-2010 school year the arts council has grants from the Mebane Foundation, Woodson Foundation and individual donors to provide $25,000 of funding for our students to be given an art experience.
The Brock hosts a performing arts series each year highlighting music, theatre, dance and more! One of the arts councils' committees produces at least one community theatre performance each year. The committee, called the Brock Players, is made up of people of all ages and walks of life who love theatre. Residents who love theatre are encouraged to be involved in acting and building of sets for the production of musicals such as Camelot and Carousel.
The ArtWorks Committee was formed to promote visual art in the county. The committee is open to all who wish to become involved in planning and promotion of art exhibits and art projects. The group meets normally the third Thursday of the month and anyone may attend. There is a different art exhibit shown each month in the Brock Gallery.
